Top 10 Comfortable, Stylish Flats for Fall 2011

Finding a comfortable flat is more difficult than finding a comfortable heel. Do you agree? Perhaps I feel that way because of my arch issues; one high, the other fallen and semi-corrected with surgery. Flat shoes tend to be lacking in any kind of arch support. I'd just as soon walk barefoot on the pavement. I tried my best to find a few solutions to the arch-less flat keeping in mind style and fit–the first five shoes come in multiple widths. But I could really use some reader help. If you've found a flat that merges comfort, support and style, please leave a comment below.

Ros hommerson miracle

1. For feet of all sizes and widths! From 4 to 13, AA to EE. According to customer reviews, doesn't aggravate bunions. Moderate arch support, good cushioning. Ros Hommerson Miracle, $98.95.
Lifestride decatur

2. Budget-friendly flat (it's man-made leather). Narrow to wide widths, comfortable footbed. Wider than average toe box. Lifestride Decatur, $49.99.

Walking cradles rena

3. Wide feet rejoice! This trendy cross-strap by Walking Cradles comes in sizes 5-13, medium, wide and extra wide. Cushioned footbed with flexible sole. Walking Cradles Elite "Rena," $145.

Vaneli serene

4. More arch support than your normal flat. This quilted number by Vaneli comes in sizes 4-13, four widths. Vaneli Serene, $105.

Timberland caska

5.  An eco-friendly, sporty moc that comes in medium and wide widths. Timberland Earthkeepers Caska, $85.

Gentle souls belody

6. No reviews yet, but this new style by Gentle Souls just looks comfortable. Supple deerskin lining and flaxseed pillows embedded in the footbed for customized cushioning. Gentle Souls Belody, $150.

Ak bambam

7.  By the looks of this flat, you wouldn't think it would score high marks for comfort, but of the 39 customer reviews, 33 awarded the shoe a 5. Accolades for this flat include: no rubbing or pinching, flexible sole, affordable, true to size, soft upper. Anne Klein Bambam, $69.
Me too legend

8. Another great turn-out by Me Too. More arch support than the regular flat. Cushioned footbed and flexible sole. Me Too Legend, $79.

Patagonia maha breathe

9. A flat with a removable insole that may just fit your custom orthotic? Or better yet, I read a customer review that mentioned inserting an arch support under the footbed. The mesh and nubuck upper make the flat breathable and lightweight; great for travel. Patagonia Maha Breathe, $80.
Dansko kitty

10. Not exactly a flat, but some of us just can't go a moment without excellent arch support or our custom orthotics. This one's for us. This style by Dansko features a removable EVA insole to accommodate a custom orthotic, roomy toe box, slip-resistant rubber sole. Dansko Kitty, $130.

How about you? Have you found a comfortable flat for problem feet? Please advise!

I absolutely love the Me Too Legends – they are so comfortable, and on a recent airplane trip, I swear every other woman at the airport was wearing a pair.

For US shoppers, I’ve seen them twice in the last 6 months at Costco for about $45 in a variety of colors.

  2. Kari, I had no idea you could find the Me Too Legend at Costco! I never make it up there, but might be worth the trip. Thanks for the info.

  3. Beth says:

Naot generally has great arch support and removable footbeds to accommodate orthotics –but I don’t even need them with my Naots. My favorite is the Believe which gives me enough support to trek through airports and long shopping trips. I also love the Matai, although I had to alter the too-long straps.

I have the Me,Too Legend in happy candy apple red patent. For a true flat, I consider it very comfy. And I get many compliments, too.

I am going to add that I have 3 pair of Terrasoles, flats, and find them to be quite supportive, cute, easy care (washable), and affordable. I’m not sure why they aren’t easier to find, because they are a bargain, imo.

  6. Kari says:

It’s definitely work a look! I just popped into my local Costco and they have them there right now. I’m tempted to pick up a second pair in another color.

Those Anne Klein flats are totally cute.

I’m wearing silver Sperry Topsiders today. They have support for a flat, my first time wearing them.

Mootsie’s Tootsie’s Dorchester (bought at Kohl’s – now on sale online at Kohl’s for $34.99). Slightly squared toe. Come in medium only but works for my very narrow foot. Surprising comfortable sole for all day wear; not a huge amount of arch support if that’s crucial for you.

  9. Wow, these flats are super cute and actually look comfortable. From the beginning of this article, I would have said the opposite about flats being harder to find. Shoes are my past time.

  10. April says:

Hey Kristen, I am going on a trip and I bought a pair of Jambu’s finally! I know this doesn’t go with your flats post, but I am so excited for comfy feet. Thanks for this blog. It completely rocks! I got the brown Odysseys that you reviewed a while back.

  11. JESS says:

Well, I just saw this post after buying a huge zappos order of flats. they should be here any day now. i’ll post in on my results. the problem w/so many of these is that they’re not dressy enough for skirts :( i want cute, dressy flats, as heels really stress my knees! come on, shoe makers, let’s start putting some arch support and cushion in these flats! and making basics… simple black, simple brown!!! if you make it, i’ll buy it in every color :)

  12. choosy feet says:

The Wolky Ballerina has great arch support, a high toe box and lots of cushioning, and they’re beautiful on your feet. Perfect for skirts or jeans. Expensive but by far one of the best shoes I have ever worn.

  13. , I’ve seen them twice in the last 6 months at Costco for about $45 in a variety of colors…It completely rocks! I got the brown Odysseys that you reviewed a while back.

  14. Rachael says:

FYI, the Anne Klein shoes are on sale at 6pm right now. Some of the other colors are cheaper than the ones in your picture, and there’s another style (buttons) that looks similar. Not sure if they’re as comfy, but they look like they would be.
