Question from Reader with Rheumatoid Arthritis: Needs Comfortable Walking/Hiking Shoe for Trip To Italy
Jennifer from Oklahoma writes,
I have had RA for almost 7 years now. When I was diagnosed, I was a new hairstylist and only 18. After 4 years of excruciating pain and trying different medications, I quit hair and moved back into my dad's house to finish my degree in graphic design. I'm doing much better now.
I'm doing a summer semester abroad in Italy with the art department at my college. I'm going to be there for a month and will be doing a lot of walking and hiking. So I want a super comfy and supportive shoe that's going to hold up for hours of walking and doesn't look like grandma duds. The other problem is I'm 6' tall and wear a size 11 and my feet tend to be on the wide size.

Dear Jennifer,
I'm so glad to hear that your rheumatoid arthritis is under control. I understand how life-altering the diagnosis can be, especially at a young age. I commend you for not giving up your sense of adventure and for planning to walk and hike Italy this summer. I recommend the Merrell Siren Sport for walking hard city streets and trekking off road. I've owned these for a year and they are by far the most comfortable exercise shoe I've owned, even more so than New Balance. They aren't cloddy looking and are very lightweight. The combination of Merrell's patented Q-Form™ alignment system (keeps feet and knees in line) and Air Cushion® midsole provide cushiony support. Good news, they come in size 11 and do run true to size!
I wish you the best in all of life's journeys.
Buon Viaggio!

I have had RA for 2 years now and have always been pretty active. I am 42 and a fitness instructor and a walker. I really need a shoe to stand up to these activities so that I am not paying for it the next morning. I know this is a lot to ask-
I also work full time and am looking through your other suggestions-thank you for the leads! So far, Bjorns have been the best bet-but they are a little casual.
Again-Thank you!
