Shortly after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age 27 (12 years ago--you do the math), I began to wear custom orthotics due to structural changes in my feet. I had a tough time finding anything other than New Balance sneakers to accommodate my new orthotics. I tried taking out the flimsy inserts in my Aerosoles and Hush Puppies to try to make room for them, but I found my foot wouldn't fit properly into the shoes. There were few fashionable alternatives to the New Balance mainstay, so I put up with the pain of my regular shoes when I needed to dress up a bit. Brands like PW Minor were my only option and, well, "option" is a relative term. Eventually I elected to have surgery to fuse the bones in my forefoot and no longer need orthotics...but I've been there, believe me!
I had never heard of Kumfs of New Zealand back then and even if I had, I doubt they would have had the selection that they have now in 2008. The footbed is made of memory foam but is fully removable. I present to you four of their more stylish models that accommodate orthotic inserts:
Casual Dress: Kumfs Farah in red patent
Sporty "Skechers-like" sneaker: Kumfs Xtract in black floral
