Need to “match” to feel
comfortable? Shoes for you!
I grew up with a perfectionist mother. Now, mind you, I don’t mean the demanding, never-can-be pleased type; thankfully she was, and is, loving and fun. But if she does something, she does it thoroughly and precisely. Translated into fashion (in the era in which I grew up), this meant things like you shouldn’t mix cream and white, that you should always use a lint brush before leaving the house, and that your shoes and handbag ought to match. And so my fashion training went.
As decades have passed, and ideals of fashion have become more enlightened, I now consider myself a recovering matcher. Even though I have listened carefully to Stacy and Clinton extol the virtues of apparel components that “go” rather than “match,” I still struggle with the notion that my shoes need to match my outfit.
So imagine my excitement at finding the Dansko Professional Leopard Patent. Dansko calls the color “Brown Leopard,” but it has shades of both brown and black together in one fun and funky, yet classy, shoe. The matches-but-is-still-interesting color scheme, combined with Dansko’s legendary comfort, made this shoe quickly become a wardrobe staple.
Whether my outfit is predominantly black, or mostly brown, I can slip
these on with confidence! They go beautifully with brights and
other neutrals as well (on days when I’m feeling adventurous.)
I’ll continue working toward freedom from matching, but until then,
these are an ideal option. Maybe I’ll get a pair for my Mom.
