When I found Barking Dogs Shoes this past summer, I was excited to see so many reviews of comfortable shoes/boots!
I have such strict criteria for my feet that I get quite excited when I come across the ultimate find. I wrote Kirsten recently, eager to share since I’ve gleaned so much from her posts the last several months. I mix it up with many fashion topics over on my blog, Style by Karen. I’m happy to be writing exclusively about shoes in this guest post.
Shoe designers have come a long way in recent years. Yet, I find myself wanting to design shoes especially to accommodate my unique foot. My search for the “perfect” shoe began two years ago when my job required me to be on my feet for longer stretches of time. Coupled with an “aging” foot that has a few problems to begin with, I was in pain after only an hour or two.
I’ve always loved shoes. For years I would receive compliments on my choices when I was a teacher. Now as a personal wardrobe stylist, I need to look the part, yet be comfortable. I’m on my feet working with clients 2-5 hours at a time. I also work at a women’s boutique part-time in 4 or 8 hour shifts. The right shoe is of utmost importance.
A few details about my feet will help explain my criteria for shoes. I’m a size 6.5 in length. The last several years I’ve worn a 7 W. I have high arches, bunions and plantar fasciitis (presently under control thanks to educating myself on the right choices). I am now dealing with an expanding foot. Putting on shoes from last fall I’ve noticed that they are suddenly tighter. I’ve read your foot gets larger with age; I’m clearly in denial that I’m now almost a 7.5.
I can’t wear a flat because my heel pain acts up. Heels over two inches with an uncomfortable footbed causes ball of the foot pain. Are you getting the picture? I know I need bunion surgery. There just has never been a “good” time. Custom orthotics were discouraged by one podiatrist; I’m seeking a second opinion. Meanwhile, I continue to research and give thanks for Zappos!
My first pick comes from a local boutique, Amenity Shoes in Portland, Oregon. The owner there is always on a mission to help me. Kumfs Ziera Realise had the perfect shoe. Mine are a taupe—a true cross between gray and brown. You will find them in a black or brown at Zappos. Here is why they work:
- European Sizes that also come in 3 widths--medium, wide and extra-wide (score!)
- Although the picture does not show this aspect well, the shoe is cut “higher” on the top which keeps it from rubbing the wrong place on the bunion.
- The cushioned foot bed is like no other and the heel is a great height. My feet are extremely happy.
My only complaint would be that they seem to scuff very easily and they are a higher price point. Comfort wins out in my book!
Next, I found the perfect boot! I own a lot of boots as they’re actually more comfortable for my bunions than shoes. I was looking for a riding style boot with a bit of a higher heel. Clark’s Lyme Grass is the most amazing boot I’ve had on my foot.
When I first checked out the foot bed, it didn’t seem that cushioned. The reviews say the “cowboy boot” heel balances the weight so it’s not all on the ball of your foot. That must be it. I honestly wore these boots for a whole 4 hour shift and then went to the mall and walked around some more. Unheard of!
They are cut wider on the top which makes it very easy to tuck in leggings or jeans. I probably won’t wear them as much with skirts, but if you have a wider calf, this could be the boot for you. Again, a little higher price for Clarks, but oh so worth it!
I would love to hear what you think of these two options. Would these work on your feet?
