In my formative years, mom would take me to the Buster Brown store in August to get my unusually large feet measured by an elderly gentleman wielding a Brannock device. I'd leave with a pair of crepe-soled lace-ups--sensible with an impeccable fit on my size 8 3/4 foot. There was no need to wear them out of the store; they wouldn't make me run faster.
It's almost back-to-school time and even with the unmitigated heat bearing down on us, it's still fun to get a first look at cooler-weather footwear for fall 2012. Here are nine on my list of favorites.
Comfortable heels that won't impede your pedals. This bike-friendly pump by Merrell features a rigid midsole for pedal power and a flexible forefoot for walking comfort.
Whoo-whoo would wear these? Owl bet a few of you would. You'd be wise to wear the Alegria Paloma with its rocker sole, removable anatomical footbed that accommodates orthotics.
Quite a few of you were miffed that I featured a discontinued shoe last week--the Dansko Rory. The Dansko Nell from the new Sofia line is similar in looks to the Rory but with a slightly lower heel and no hard wood sole.
This one's for fans of the Naot Matai. The new Taramoa has all the same features: soft nubuck uppers, removable cork/latex anatomical footbed, adjustable mary jane strap, slightly elevated one-inch heel. The teal color is simply gorgeous!
Made for bright-hued tights, the Jambu Napa in black and white plaid features a memory foam footbed, roomy toe box and shock-absorbing heel.
The Ahnu Karma is a great transition shoe from summer to fall with its open styling yet fall-hued upper. Great reviews on Zappos for fit and overall comfort.
If mary janes are too cutesy for you, what do you think of the harness boot-inspired Born Zowy? A sensible two inch heel, cushioned footbed and moderate arch support makes the Zowy a tough-looking yet comfortable addition to your fall ensemble.
An update on the Earthies Cristiana style from last fall, the Syriana features a back zipper for easy on and off, signature "wellness" footbed including arch support.
Alright, the list wouldn't be complete without a boot. You don't even need snow as an excuse to wear this unique, red-toe boot by Rieker. Unless other online stores choose to carry this boot, it's going sell out quickly at OnlineShoes.com.
Which one is your favorite?
