Comfortable Dress Shoes for Women

Published on October 29th, 2012 | by Kirsten Borrink

Three Comfortable Classic Black Pumps recently put together a nice little slide show called "25 Shoes for Baby Boomer Feet." I'm sure they meant to contact me, or perhaps their email went to my spam bin by accident. Yes, that's it.

While flipping through their compilation, I find myself nodding in agreement with the first ten recommendations and then the show goes off the deep end. I can appreciate the Stuart Weitzman aesthetic and attention to detail, but most of his shoes are over $300. And Salvatore Ferragamo is sure to attract the baby boomer with bucks at $700 or more, but are they truly comfortable for aging feet?

Let me show you three classic black career pumps for under $200 that provide ample toe room, cushioning and support. How about you? Do you have a favorite classic pump that's easy on the barking dogs?

Ara Tacy Pump

1. Ara Tacy: Available in microfiber or leather upper, the Tacy by German brand ARA features a two inch sculpted heel and a half-inch platform. Room for toes, cushioned footbed and arch support. $189 at Zappos, more sizes and colors for $142-179 at, or $189.95 at The Walking Company.

Cobb Hill TIffany

2. Cobb Hill Tiffany: From my favorite new brand of 2012, Cobb Hill introduces the Tiffany pump. Cobb Hill is owned by New Balance, so you know comfort is key. The Tiffany features a 2 3/4" heel, cushioned insole that's removable, shock-absorbing outsole and comes in wide widths. $115 at Zappos, $114.95 at

Gentle souls show your logo

3. Gentle Souls Show Your Logo: If bunions keep you out of traditional pumps, try this one by Kenneth Cole's Gentle Souls brand. The vamp doesn't cross at the bunion area and the leather is super soft. A cushioned Poron memory foam insole and flaxseed-filled arch are covered in supple deerskin leather for all-day comfort. $195 at Zappos, $195 at Amazon (free shipping and returns), $194.95 at

Would you say that any of these have a rigid sole and would work for hallux limitus? Perhaps the Ara Tacy with its platform? Thank you for your thoughts on this, as I am in dire need of a classic pump and have yet to find one after months of shopping. Sigh.

If you have hallux limits, I would try a kitten heel, a platform that decreases the overall heel height and/or a dancer’s pad within the shoe. (All of these suggestions are assuming you have ANY motion at the joint
