Spring Footwear 2014 | Second Installment: Comfortable Ballet Flats

Untitled (9)

Just because it’s a flat, doesn’t mean it’s comfortable, right? How many of you have suffered a flare of plantar fasciitis after a day in your favorite ballet flats? Or perhaps your bunions get mighty angry when the vamp crosses them. Let me show you three ballet flat options for spring that take into consideration comfort plus style.

Chocolat Blu Shoes

1. Chocolat Blu Cam 2:  Come one bunion, come all. Super-soft leather and a glove-like fit will accommodate a wider forefoot while staying put at the heel. This unique style features a moccasin-like vamp. While the insole is lightly cushioned, there is no arch support. You can remedy this with a pair of Spenco Thinsole 3/4 orthotics. They’re thin enough to fit into a ballet-style flat while providing decent arch support. I recommend ordering a half size up as the Cam 2 runs small (especially if you plan on adding an insole).

Earth Shoes Butterfly

2. Earth Butterfly: A sweet ballet flat with a 1/2″ heel, cushioned and contoured footbed with arch support and an elasticized topline for a secure fit. $94.99 at Zappos, $94.95 at Shoebuy (special deals), $94.95 at OnlineShoes.com.

Gentle Souls Shoes

3. Gentle Souls Bay Unique: There’s a lot going on with the Bay Unique, yet it retains its chic profile. Flaxseed pillow arch supports along with 3mm Poron® foam cushioning make up the footbed which is lined in soft deerskin. A wider toebox accommodates problem toes, while elasticized ankle straps keep the shoe securely on the heel. $195 at Amazon, $209.95 at OnlineShoes.com, $210 at Zappos, free shipping and returns.
