Wide Toe Box Shoes

Dansko Boots (and some other great new Dansko styles!)

Dansko boots, heels, wedges, sneakers, clogs. Boy Dansko, you have come a long way.

Do you remember your first pair of Danskos? I sure do; they’re part of my shoe story, part of how Barking Dog Shoes – comfortable shoes for women –  came to be. The “Kirsten” style was a simple black mary jane clog available around 1997 when my RA was at its worst. I believe it providential how I came across that foot-saving clog. After a half hour search around Nordstrom, I left feeling defeated. Just a few steps out the door and into the mall, I saw a small shoe store named Joyce Selby (do these still exist?). The saleslady showed me the Dansko Kirsten, I tried it on, I fell in love, the rest is history.

Did you know that this month, October 2015, marks Dansko’s 25th anniversary? Their flagship Professional clog from their stapled clog collection still carries the honorable APMA (American Podiatric Medical Association) seal of acceptance and remains a favorite among healthcare professionals. I recall the rocker sole is what sold me, taking the pressure off of my achy RA toes.

I’ve watched Dansko collections come and go over the years (and some I still miss, like the Golden Gate collection), but I appreciate their efforts to diversify and expand their brand to incorporate heels, wedges, sneakers, shoes with removable footbeds and some narrow/wide-width offerings. And even the new Dansko boots out this fall really are sharp.

Take a look at what’s new from Dansko for fall-winter 2015-16.

Dansko Boots
1. Dansko Maria: A Zappos customer gushes, “When I wear these Dansko boots, I feel all is right with the world. I will only buy clothes that look good with these boots this winter.” Another loves the Scandinavian look of the boot and how it goes as well with rolled up boyfriend jeans as it does with tights and a skirt, or leggings and a tunic. The Dansko Maria features a soft Scotchguard-treated nubuck upper, cushioned insole with arch support, polyurethane wood-look outsole and side zipper. Some customers comment that the toe box isn’t quite as roomy as the Dansko Professional stapled clog. $169.95 at Zappos, and Amazon.

2. Dansko Ames: I like the style, but I really love the rich autumn colors! The Ames utility boot is new to the Dansko boots fall line-up but is gaining fans quickly. The Ames features a  moderate 2 1/2″ block heel with a half-inch platform, removable footbed with built-in arch support, steel stability shank and rounded toe. Customers like the adjustability that the laces provide along with the side zipper for easy on and off. $194.95 at Zappos, $189.95-195 at Amazon.

3. Dansko Pro XP: Not necessarily a new collection, but you may not know that your favorite Professionals are now available in an XP version (Extra Performance). The sole is SATRA-tested for slip-resistance, and the cushioned memory foam footbed is removable to accommodate an orthotic. The roomy toe box and rocker sole remain the same as the Professional, as does its APMA seal of acceptance. Find out more in this video:

The Dansko Pro XP is available from $140-150 at Zappos, $99-149.95 at The Walking Company. Dansko just launched a new line of footwear specifically for healthcare professionals called Dansko Work Wonders with wipe-clean uppers, removable footbeds, slip-resistant outsoles, arch support and more. The reviews look especially promising for the Clover style.

The thing that is disappointing is that they made some solid color Professional clogs in the wool colors a few years ago. They were great for those of us who don’t want leather. Now they only have the wool in patterns, and those are not as practical.

I love the Maria in the dark blue, but wish the faux wood sole was darker. That will keep me from ordering; I just don’t like the light sole with the darker upper.

  3. Kirsten says:

The Walking Company has a completely black one exclusive for them.

  4. cedar says:

Thank you, Kirsten. But, I want the dark blue upper with dark sole. 🙁
You got me excited and I scurried over to look. Darn.

  5. Ellen says:

I didn’t like the lighter sole at first but after seeing it in pictures I decided to try them on. Wow, I like them a lot better than the dark sole offered at The Walking Company.

I’m having a hard time finding the shoes with wide toe box on this site. Didn’t have any luck after searching for a while.
I read about Kristen at my rheumatologists office and her struggles with RA and how she suffered pain on top of her feet. I thought I had finally found someone and someplace that could save me. I have only two pairs of shoes that I can wear with comfort.

Try this: or search by “roomy toe box,” that’s a phrase I’ve used. I just got a pair of these loafers by Chaco and they’re wonderful–I haven’t reviewed them yet. The toe box is nice and wide, good arch support.

Have you stopped updating this since 2016?
