Earthies Boots: Why We Adore the Alluring Athena Bootie
This review of the Earthies Boots “Athena” is sponsored by Earthbrands.com. The opinions are completely my own based on experience.
A stylish, comfortable black ankle boot seems like it ought to be an easy find, given it’s one of the most ubiquitous of fall and winter shoe styles. But I’ve searched for the past several years, and the perfect boot has eluded me – in every boot I’ve tried, I’ve found either the heel is too high, toe is to narrow, comfort is lacking, or the style is too dressy, too casual, or just plain boring. So you might understand why my heart leapt a little when I saw the Earthies boots “Athena.”
First off, the block heel is as on-trend as it gets this fall, and it adds stability – a plus in the comfort column. The 2 2/5″ inch heel (offset by a 2/5″ platform) is the just-right height even Goldilocks would love. There are also comfort features in Earthies boots like a unique molded footbed, and an anatomic arch that increases touch points between the heel and forefoot. The cradled toe area evenly distributes weight away from the toes (I especially notice this compared to the feel of some other boots which put pressure uncomfortably on my forefoot.) A padded heel and high density latex foam cushioning mean additional comfort underfoot.
I have a moderate bunion, and initially was concerned that the toe box seemed a little narrow. But after a few of wearings I notice the soft suede uppers have given enough to accommodate my bunion. (I also switched from a standard sock to a thinner trouser sock, which makes the boot feel roomier in the forefoot.)
I love the dress-it-up-or-down styling of these Earthies boots, the perfect height of the boot shaft, and the richness of the suede. A note about suede: the second time I wore these boots I noticed I had inadvertently rubbed my toe against something (probably a chair or table leg), and the suede looked smooth and shiny. I ruefully wondered if my new boots were ruined. Then I remembered having a suede eraser and brush in my shoe care bin, which worked like a charm! Keep inexpensive products like this in mind if you’ve ever felt hesitant about the care and durability of suede – they really help. Preventative maintenance like a protective spray can also make a big difference.
