Earthies Essen Ghillie Flat Review – Amazing Support & Style

All the fuss about Tieks lately makes me shake my head. There’s a slight chance I’m missing out on miracle flats, but I’m going to hold to my theory that flat flats hurt in the long run. I’ll stick with more structured “flats” like the sleek Essen by Earthies.

The Earthies Essen looks like a flat, but it actually features a slight hidden wedge of maybe 3/4 inch. The contoured footbed provides the best arch support of any flat I own but doesn’t skimp on cushioning. Currently I’m trying to kick a painful bout of plantar fasciitis in my left heel, so while I can’t wear the Essen all day, it’s my go-to when I need to dress up a little.

Most ghillie-lace shoes must be tied to secure, but the Essen features one figure-8 stretch band to accomplish the same look. This feature allows for minimal adjustability, so if you have high volume feet (I like this explanation of high and low volume feet from The Alaska Hunting forum–don’t smirk), the laces might feel too tight after a while. But if you have narrow, low volume feet, this may be the perfect flat as the stretch band will keep your feet from slipping out!

I typically steer away from ballet-style flats as often the vamp crosses the bunion area. I’ve got the double whammy of moderate bunions and a bone spur at the base of my big toe. While the Earthies Essen doesn’t really bother the bunions, it does cross on top of the bone spur causing some irritation. I’ll add some moleskin padding to see if that helps. But I’ve got messed up feet due the rheumatoid arthritis. If you have relatively normal feet, you’ll love the feel of this shoe. Honestly, the footbed is amazing.

The Earthies Essen is available in black, navy and prune suede in whole and half sizes 5-10, 11, 12. I ordered a 10 for my 9.5-10 medium width feet. $139.99 at, free shipping and returns; #139.95 at Zappos, $139.95 at Nordstrom, free shipping and returns; $139.90 at Amazon, Prime shipping and free returns on some color/size combos.

Those are gorgeous. I LOVE them. I notice the back is quite high and wonder if it cuts into the ankle. I want them. The inner wedge idea reminds me of Rockport; I love that idea.
Kirsten, you are slimmer than ever. Also, you look so young! You have my respect and admiration!

  2. Wendelah says:

Those are so pretty. I wish they came in wide widths but then I say that about 99.9% of shoes.

  3. Kirsten Borrink says:

I do know that the Earthies Bindi now comes in wide.

  4. Kirsten Borrink says:

It honestly does not. I did read a customer review that stated she experienced the ankle rubbing, but I did not. Not slim…it’s the dress that hides the middle…but thank you kindly. xxoo

  5. Chloe says:

Hi! Are you wearing them with or without socks? I have such a hard time wearing closed toe shoes without socks, I always get blisters on the tops of my toes, so it would be fantastic if these were comfortable without socks.

  6. Colleen Reed says:

Dress review please? Looks great on you.

  7. Kirsten Borrink says:

That’s from TJ Maxx!I just got it and love it because it’s so forgiving in the middle. It’s Max Studio brand and was $29.99–just picked it up last week. ALso available at Last Call (Neiman Marcus) and Nordstrom Rack.

  8. Kirsten Borrink says:

Without socks. They don’t leave blisters on my toes, rather make a slight squeaky noise if my feet are a bit sweat…blah…

I bought these shoes. Here’s my review, I’m normally between an 8 and 8 1/2, definitely needed the 8 1/2. I LOVE THEM. They look adorable and trendy, but feel wonderful. Even the guy at Nordstrom told me “wow, it’s hard to find comfortable and cute”. I like that the crossover is just there all of the time and no fussing with ties. They are a bit wide for my narrow feet, and don’t come in narrow, but those in place crossover elastics work great. I wear them without socks. Now, if i can just find a pair of wonderful black booties I’ll be set for fall!!

So appreciated. I love when readers follow up with their experiences as our feet are all so different–every review helps! I love how easy they are to slip-on , yet they classy-up any outfit I wear.

Black booties: have you seen the Dansko Shirley or Maria??

  11. Jennifer says:

These are amazingly comfortable! Wonderful arch support! I got the navy and it is stunning.

  12. Kirsten Borrink says:

    I LOVE the navy.

  13. Nina Chlapowski says:

Try Munro – they have several cute & comfortable styles ?

  14. SJ says:

I loved these when I tried them on in the store, but after wearing them one day, the elastic cut into my feet terribly (I have skinny bony feet), and the heal rubbed. Also, most embarrassing, my feet made “farting noises” when I walked. I solved this but putting in insoles. I wish these fit better because they are so cute on.

  15. Kirsten Borrink says:

Oh no. That’s the shoe fail trifecta: straps that cut, heels that rub and farting noises. I understand about the straps. If I wear mine too long, they do get tight.

  16. Brenda says:

Thanks for the review. I just bought a pair from Sierra Trading Post for $29 (and I had a $10 coupon :). I see that 6pm has some reasonable prices.
