It’s a beautiful fall day on the mid-western campus of the small liberal arts college where I live and teach.  My family is about go on an outdoor outing, and I am excited to receive a delivery of new shoes for the occasion.  The package with my Bogs Eugene Chukka boots has arrived.  The sturdiness and woodsy design of the box match the contents.  The boot comes in three colors: pewter, black or chocolate.  The pair before me are chocolate and the earthy brown tone matches the trails they are meant to hike.  This fashionable footwear holds the promise of fitting a hard-working and hard-playing lifestyle.  The color of the laces are an exact match to the boot and I see that the cushiony insole is easily removable for those who may need room for various orthotics.

I put them on with eager anticipation.  With the feel of a sturdy slipper, the look of business-casual leather and the support of a rugged boot, I’m pleased with the new shoes.  Noticing the waterproof signature on the back of the boot, I pour a cup of water over the whole front of the shoe.  The water slides off as if to not even touch the leather, no residue of water remains.  The boots breathe and yet my feet stay comfortably warm on cold days.  The soles are thick and tough and ready to handle hard terrain.  The support of the boot matches it’s comfort and therein I see the boot’s value not only as a trendy way to rake the lawn, but also as a stylish shoe to take me into the wintery months ahead.  I’ll be wearing these boots for work as well as play.
