OTBT Boots: The Cute, Warm, Practical OTBT Fanfare (Review)

This review of the OTBT boots “Fanfare” is sponsored by OTBT Shoes. The opinions are completely our own based on experience.

Those of us who experience cold winter weather sometimes feel we have to choose between boots that are warm and practical for outdoor conditions, and those that are attractive and won’t overheat us once we step indoors.  These OTBT boots nail it on both counts! Style, quality and function all come together beautifully in the OTBT Fanfare.

This waterproof leather ankle boot has a fleece lining, a thermal inner sock, and heat-retaining sole for maximum comfort outdoors in even the coldest weather. (I wore them in single-digit temps and didn’t feel the slightest chill in my toes or any cold creeping up through the sole.) OTBT Boots : OTBT FanfareAnd do you know what’s really cool? These OTBT boots are part of the brand’s Off Road collection, featuring a unique in-sole technology called the OR Rotator System with reversible spikes to give you traction in conditions that are icy or snow-packed and slippery.

I love that while filled with practical features, the silhouette of these OTBT boots doesn’t scream “snow boots.”

The ankle height shaft is fashionable, and an elastic pull tab adds style, helps keep out snow, and minimizes heel slippage by customizing the fit.  Slip-on styling makes for quick and easy on/off. I have a medium width foot and moderate bunions, and these fit me well with a mid-weight sock.  Without bunions, I might be able to wear a thicker sock, but I didn’t feel I needed them.  My favorite Smartwool everyday socks kept me perfectly comfy indoors and out.  A note on OTBT sizing: these boots are available in whole sizes only.  (As a consistent size 8 1/2, I sometimes find it aggravating when shoes are only available in whole sizes.) But the size 9 fits me beautifully with just a bit of extra wiggle room.  So half sizes, size up.  Whole sizes, go with your usual size (and perhaps consider sizing up if you like wearing heavy socks). I like it! I like all of the features to keep feet warm, and the downsized profile. Can they be worn inside, with the spikes? How’s that work?
I wish Zappos or Nordstrom would carry them. 🙁

    • Beth Bengtson says:

The spikes are reversible, so for inside wear you simply flip the spiked plates over using a small tool that comes along with the boots. The spikes “disappear” into the sole of the shoe and the reverse side is the same material as the rest of the sole, so they’re perfectly safe & comfortable for indoor wear.

I wish Zappos and Nordstrom carried more OTBT too.

Can you tell me if the boot is actually flat? Fro the outside it looks like it has a slight elevation to the heel, but it could be that it’s decorative.

Any heel in a winter boot is a deal-breaker for me….

    • Beth Bengtson says:

I agree with you about heels on winter boots! The elevation you see from the outside is mainly decorative. Wearing the boot I detect a very slight rise from the forefoot to heel, but not enough to be considered a noticeable heel.

I just got these today, and unfortunately have to return them. I sized up, and could not even get my foot inside the boot. I have a high arch/instep, but still…. Just looking at them, they appeared on the small side. I had great hopes too, since I already took one spill on the ice this month.

    • Kirsten Borrink says:

Trish, I’m sorry they didn’t work. Have you heard of Icebug? The carbide tips are wonderful for traction (can’t really wear them inside, though). I have a pair–reviewed here.
