Whether you wear them with your robe in the morning, as a respite for tired feet in the evening, or all day as you work from home, chances are a pair of comfortable slippers is part of your footwear collection. As with any other shoes that see daily wear, it’s worth finding a pair that’s cozy, supportive and durable. See our top 9 picks based on our experience and customer reviews.
My personal favorite WFH house shoe was, is, and will probably always be the Stegmann Original 108 wool clog which I review in detail here. They’re perfect for my RA-challenged feet (bunions, tailors bunions, hammertoes, midfoot arthritis…) A roomy forefoot, metatarsal and arch support, firm sole and temperature regulating soft wool uppers keep my dogs from barking. I find they run true to size.
•Sizes: 5.5-12 •Width: One width that runs like a generous medium to slightly wide shoe • Price: $155 from Stegmann USA (are you a teacher, school faculty or staff? Enjoy 12% off!)
“Finding slip-on shoes or slippers with a removable insole has been a challenge. Not only do these have a removable insole for use with custom orthotics, but the provided insole has such excellent arch support that I didn’t even need to swap it out.” – Zappos customer
An orthotic-friendly slipper with Danish ancestry, the unisex Sanita Skagen features felted wool uppers and a removable cork/latex footbed with enhanced arch support. A versatile waterproof rubber outsole means you can wear these to the mailbox…or further!
• Sizes: 4.5-12 • Width: Regular • Price: $169 from Zappos & Sanita
“These are so comfortable and roomy — I can wear thick winter socks with them. And, the insulation in the shoes helps keep my feet warm, but not too hot.” – Oofos customer Jackie
It really doesn’t matter which Oofos style you choose, they all make excellent house shoes/slippers. It just happens that the Oocoozie style is cozier and more slipperish. If you suffer from plantar fasciitis or have plain old sensitive feet, Oofos are for you. The OOfoam™ technology absorbs shock and provides the type of cushioning that is Goldilocks perfect–not too squishy, not too hard. Arch support is excellent as is toe room.
• Sizes: 5-11 • Width: Generous M • Price: $96 from Oofos
“These are the perfect slippers- the total foot support you would expect from Birks, soft shearling footbed, and the toasty warmth of wool. Other slippers have left my feet way too hot, but bare feet on wood floors in Maine winters makes for icy cold toes, the wool regulates the temperature perfectly. Also not having arch support in most other slippers leaves achy feet and ankles after too long. These have solved all of those problems – worth every penny!” – Shonë, Birkenstock customer
Birkenstock’s first slipper, the Zermatt features a cork and latex footbed with enhanced arch support, a genuine shearling lining and a latex outsole.
• Sizes: 35-43 (4-12.5) • Widths: M & W • Price: $99 from from Birkenstock & Zappos
I consulted the BIFL(Buy It For Life) Reddit discussion about comfortable slippers and discovered Danish-designed Glerups mentioned repeatedly. The jury’s still out on their long-term durability, but people love their temperature-regulating soft wool uppers and roomy fit. The rubber sole option provides more cushion and improves durability. I’d love your feedback on this brand in the comments section below.
• Sizes: 6-13 • Width: One width that fits snug yet accommodating • Price: $130-155 from Glerups
“I chose these cute slippers to help break my bad habit of not wearing shoes in the house, despite heel pain. Happy to report they did the trick and kept my feet cozy at the same time.” Sharon, Kuru customer
The Kuru Loft house shoe their signature ULTIMATE INSOLE. This dual-density polyurethane insole offers a deep heel cup and contoured arch support to help treat and prevent foot pain conditions such as plantar fasciitis. A rubber outsole allows for outdoor wear too.
Sizes: 6-12 • Width: M • Price: $149 from Kuru Footwear (Check out the Kuru Renew resale market for a pair of “Pre-loved” Loft house shoes)
One you’ve experienced the comfort and support of Haflinger wool clogs, we doubt you’ll ever go back to standard issue slippers. The darling Couricini style shown here features a anatomically contoured cork and latex midsole to keep your arches supported all day long. The wide toe box ensures room for bunions or thick socks (we recommend Maggie’s organic cotton ragg socks). The high quality wool felt uppers and lining are breathable, warm (but not too warm), and antibacterial. Go ahead and wear these Haflingers outside–the slip-resistant outsole is made of water-repellent rubber. This style runs a little large, you may want to size down.
• Sizes: 5-13 • Width: Generous M • Price: $117-160 from Amazon & Zappos
