5 Stylish Orthotic Friendly Sandals with Removable Footbeds

Orthotic-Friendly Sandals

Naot Begonia

Are you tired of wearing sneakers and closed-toe shoes all summer long just because you must wear doctor-prescribed orthotics?
We hear you and we’re here to help. While we’re tempted to simply recommend a Birkenstock or Vionic sandal since both offer excellent orthotic-like support, we understand the importance of sticking to a doctor’s order to wear orthotic-friendly sandals to remedy your foot issue whatever it may be: over-pronation, supination, planter fasciitis, Morton’s neuroma. Keep in mind that it can be tricky to get a perfect fit when using a custom orthotic in a sandal. You may have to trim the orthotic a bit or order a larger size sandal.

Naot Begonia: This orthotic-friendly sandal features an enclosed heel which helps keep an insert in place. Four adjustable straps allow for a customized fit for bunions, swollen feet, or high insteps (those are faux buckles–the straps fasten with velcro). Available in euro sizes 35-42 (4-11) at Zappos, Amazon, and The Walking Company. Other Naot sandals with enclosed heels and removable footbeds include the Papaki, Yarrow and Selo. Find a Naot retailer near you by calling 1-800-NAOT-USA.

Ecco Babett and Ecco Soft 5 Sandals

Ecco Babett and Ecco Soft 5 sandals: Not every Ecco sandal features a removable footbed, but these two styles do! We’ve read a few reviews praising the shoe for its removable footbed allowing the use of an orthotic. Plus, the adjustable straps make both styles excellent walking sandals for summer. The Ecco Babett is available in euro sizes 35-43 (4-12) at Zappos, Amazon, and  6pm.com. The Ecco Soft 5 Sandal with 3 straps is available at Zappos and Amazon, while you can find the cross-strap version at The Walking Company and Amazon.

Spring Step Maryjo

Spring Step MaryjoAnother adjustable strappy sandal with a removable footbed, but no reviews. It looks like a more affordable option to Naot perhaps? European sizes 35-42 (5-11) at Zappos.

Orthotic Friendly Sandals

Revere Valencia

Revere Sandals (Valencia style shown): Revere footwear is designed with customization in mind. Their shoes and sandals feature deep heel cups with removable footbeds to accommodate custom orthotics. Each pair comes with a set of matching strap extensions if you need more adjustability. The Valencia is one of their dressier sandals available in sizes 5-12, medium and wide widths from RevereShoes.com. You can also find Revere footwear at FootwearEtc.com.

Alegria Viki (and other Alegria sandals): Always an all-around winner in the comfort shoe department, Alegria continues to impress us with their exciting new styles each season. The Viki is one of many styles with a removable cork and latex footbed. The rocker sole is an added benefit if you suffer from forefoot pain. Available in euro sizes 35-42 (5-11), medium and wide widths from AlegriaShoes.com, Zappos, Amazon, and Nordstrom.

I can’t figure out what the shoe is that is shown in black and red(?). None of the links seem to go to this particular shoe.

    Thanks.

Forgot to say, thanks for the fabulous blog! So many good tips.

My orthotics are 3/4. I have not yet figured out how to bridge the gap when you remove the insole.

      Hi Loretta:
I cut the insoles that come in the shoes and use the front of them with my 3/4 orthoics. I cut a little at a time until I get the right fit, can take some time, but it is better than cutting too much off.

Kirsten — have you tried the Revere Oslo chelsea boot? I just found it and I am dying to try it but not sure where to find it online…

I’d highly recommend the Finn Comfort sandals. Yes, they are expensive, but they last for years. Though I use Superfeet insoles in most other shoes, The Finn Comfort give me great support without swapping out the insole. My issues are bunions and extra-wide feet. I can’t fit into their oxfords, but many of the sandals do work for me. Most, if not all, of their sandals have velcro straps.

Interesting that you don’t include the Drew Barefoot Freedom Collection in the mix?
The above styles come in limited widths (to a W) however Drew offers sizes from 5 to 13 in N,M,W,WW up to a 13WW as well 13N! Every style has a removable footbed for inserts.
Needless to say that the average size continues to increase making these a great resource for those having a difficult time finding their size. Another benefit is that they come in whole and half sizes! Euro sizing is great- until you fall “in between”. Even with all the adjustable this can still be an issue. Drew sandals can be found on Zappo’s as well as The Walking Company & FootSmart as well.
I hope this helps for those having issues finding their size- and fit!
