The Best Nursing Shoes for Long Shifts on Hard Tile Floors
We love our nurses and want their feet to feel as comfortable as possible while taking good care of their patients. We’ve asked our Facebook readers for input as well as doing our own research to find the best nursing shoes based on various foot issues. If you have a favorite shoe for nurses and medical professionals, by all means leave a comment and add to our list. Your recommendations are our best resource!
If you love Dansko’s arch support and roomy toe box, but need an alternative with more cushioning and flexibility, consider the Klogs Naples. Do you wear an orthotic? No problem! The latex-free footbed is removable. Slip-resistant and shock-absorbing outsoles make the Naples a wardrobe staple for healthcare professionals. Available in cheery prints, hospital white and other neutral shades; sizes 5-14 (larger sizes in black and white only), medium and wide widths from Zappos, The Walking Company, and Amazon.
Do you feel like clogs weigh you down when you’re in a hurry? Try the lightweight Sanita Laylah Koi–it’s everything you need in a comfortable nursing shoe to get you through a long shift: a contoured, removable footbed, slip-resistant outsole and an “anti-fatigue” heel that’ll protect your feet and knees from the shock of walking on hard floors all day or night. Available in pink, navy and black, euro sizes 35-42 from Zappos, Amazon, and Shoes.com.
We’re huge fans of Birkenstock for their fabulously supportive cork and latex footbeds that conform to wearers’ feet over time. Now nurses can benefit from Birkenstock comfort in the classic Tokyo clog with a super-grip outsole that’s been tested for slip-resistance. The Birkenstock Tokyo Super Grip even features an extra layer of EVA cushioning in the midsole. Available in euro sizes 36-45, narrow and regular widths (keep in mind that a Birkenstock narrow works for medium width feet too, and a regular fits like a wide). Find a pair at Zappos, and Amazon.
Who knew a style so similar to the ultra-chic Superga 2750 would come from a brand called Nurse Mates? And it’s not a clog! The on-trend Fenton sneaker is part of Nurse Mates Align collection of footwear with ergonomically-designed orthotics to support, stabilize and maintain proper alignment. Stretch laces turn the Fenton into a convenient slip-on. Available in whole and half sizes 6-10, 11; medium and wide widths from Nursemates.com, Zappos, Scrubs and Beyond, and Shoemall.
On to a crowd favorite, the Alegria Debra Professional. Alegria started out as an orthopedic brand and swiftly gained popularity among education, healthcare and service industry professionals. Ask anyone what they love about the brand and they’ll list three features: the arch support (provided by the thick, removable cork-latex footbed), the roomy and wide toe box, and the rocker sole. The Debra Professional’s stain-resistant upper wipes up easily and slip-resistant outsoles keep you safe. Available in euro sizes 34-43, medium and wide widths from Zappos, Alegria Shoe Shop, and Amazon (check out the fun sugar skulls print).
An article about the best nursing shoes wouldn’t be complete without a shout out to Dansko. While many nurses love the arch support and rocker sole, there can be a tendency to roll an ankle in the Dansko Professional style. Have you heard of their newer line, Work Wonders? They’re made specifically for healthcare professionals with features such as wipeable uppers, slip-resistant outsoles, a lightweight frame, and lower heel than the Professional (although reviews mention the arch support isn’t as substantial as the Professional and Pro XP). You can check out Work Wonders by Dansko at WorkWonders.Dansko.com, Zappos, Amazon, and 6pm.com.
Update: After publishing this article, I learned of the upgraded Dansko Pro XP, aptly named Pro XP 2.0 (hat tip to Facebook fan). They’re even more lightweight than the original Pro XP with same cushioned, removable footbed and contoured arch support.
Nurses, which shoes help you get through a 12-hour shift without wanting to kick them off half way through? We value your input and appreciate the dedication to your career.
