Shoes and Sandals for Bunions: The Best & Most Stylish Picks

No matter the season, bunions refuse to conform to ill-fitting footwear. No worries, we’ve got you (and your bunion) covered! See six of our favorite shoes and sandals for bunions. All feature soft leather uppers, vamps that don’t cross the bunion area and other comfort features to carry you through the day painlessly. Feel free to leave a comment with your favorite shoes or sandals for bunions that have helped you!

Sandals for Bunions - Born Iwa

Born Iwa sandal

We  love the wide criss-cross straps of the Born Iwa. Made from supple leather, the straps envelope the forefoot and cover the bunion area without irritation. The insole is nicely cushioned but arch support is minimal. The Born Iwa is available in whole sizes 6-11 (order down if a  half-size for best fit), $94.95 from Zappos and Nordstrom.

The Matai is Naot’s longtime best-seller for multiple reasons: removable cork/latex footbed with metatarsal and arch support, soft leather uppers that conform to shape of foot (including bunions) and a vamp that crosses well below bunion area. The hook and loop closure provides a snug fit at the instep. Read my detailed review or take it from a happy Zappos customer:

“Very supportive and attractive – I have a hard time finding shoes that accommodate my bunions and have enough padding and support in the footbed without being too wide in the heel. These are just about perfectly comfortable with the added bonus of having an interesting visual appeal-not too cloddy. Love ’em!”

The Naot Matai is available in euro sizes 35-43 (4-12) for $81-179.99 from Zappos, and Amazon.

Shoes and Sandals for Bunions - Birkenstock Tracy

Birkenstock Tracy

Reviews are coming in 5-stars for this new closed-toe style by Birkenstock. The Tracy features soft nubuck uppers and a wide toe box to accommodate bunions. And of course you can’t go wrong with the supportive cork and latex Birkenstock footbed. Available in euro sizes 36-42 (5-11), narrow (fits more like a medium) and regular (fits like a wide) for $130 from Zappos, Happy Feet Plus, Amazon, and Birkenstock.com.

Sandals for Bunions - bzees

Bzees Smile

Need an affordable sandal for bunions that’s cute and comfy? Try Bzees! They specialize in lightweight, ultra-cushioned footwear with stretch fabric uppers–perfect for bunions. We love the Bzees Smile with its happy bow and cheery color selection (plus, they’re washable). Find the Bzees Smile in sizes 5-12, medium and wide widths for $48-69 from Zappos, Amazon and DSW.

Sandals for Bunions - Vionic Tawny

Vionic Tawny

Do you shy away from heels for fear they’ll put pressure on painful bunions? Don’t give up quite yet! The Vionic Tawny platform sandal receives rave reviews, even from bunion-sufferers:

Eureka! Finally after ordering over half a dozen sandals, lugging them back to UPS I finally found the perfect sandal for me. I have tried on VIONIC shoes before but for one reason or another, never purchased any. I am a convert! I have a medium width foot but because I have a serious bunion I have to wear a Wide width or a medium that runs wide. Usually the better shoes run wider and I can wear them in a Medium. So these 8M are perfect on my 8M foot. They are comfortable, none of the straps rub where they shouldn’t. Because they are a platform, they really aren’t as high as they look and I have no trouble walking in them, even at my age!

It’s also helpful to note that the Vionic Tawny (and most Vionic styles) has excellent arch support!

Find the Vionic Tawny in sizes 5-11, medium and wide widths for $81-105 from Zappos, and Amazon. The Vionic Astrid is a similar style to the Tawny with good reviews for bunion coverage.

Fitflop Fay

Fitflop Felicity

Fitflop released two new styles this season that stylishly cover bunions and adjust to accommodate them. The Fay espadrille wedge and Felicity backstrap sandal feature twisted rope closures atop Fitflop’s trademark DuocomFF™ and Microwobbleboard™ midsoles. A Fitflop customer says this about the Felicity sandal:

“Not only comfortable, but also look great and will accommodate large bunions as well as hide them.”

Find the Fitflop Felicity in sizes 5-11 for $91 from Fitflop.com. The Fay is available in sizes 5-11 for $160 from Fitflop.com.

Bunions are often caused by poor posture when walking. Found that info when looking on how to help my husband fix his duck walk, which can create bunions.

Look up Mobility WOD – for ways to address posture issues.

This is a great article to read on picking shoes for children as poor foot health and posture issues begun there:

I’m in Australia so it’s winter now and I live in my Arcopedico L19 comfort lytech ankle boots. The soft top and wide toe box don’t rub on my bunions and the arch support gives all day comfort. The side zip means easy on and off for my arthritic hands and feet. These have been a real surprise and I can highly recommend them. BTW, I love your newsletter and informative articles. You’re my go to site when I need to research new shoes – thank you!

Thank you, Jane! Yes, that’s a great boot for bunion problems! Thanks for the recommendation 🙂
