American Podiatric Medical Association Shoes = Healthy Feet!

If comfortable shoes are important to you, chances are you value foot health in general. Do you know about the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA)? The APMA represents the vast majority of the estimated 15,000 podiatrists in the U.S., and is the leading resource for foot and ankle health information. (In case you don’t know, a podiatrist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg.)

Among many other endeavors, the APMA grants a Seal of Acceptance and Seal of Approval to products found to promote good foot health. The Barking Dog loves that this list includes shoes!   Who better to recommend comfortable shoes than a group of podiatrists? There are a number of shoe brands and many styles that earn the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance, but since we value fashion as well as function, we picked a few styles that prove good-for-your-feet shoes can also be cute! Take a look:

Chaco Pineland Moc

Chaco Pineland Moc

The Chaco Pineland Moc provides wonderful arch support in a moccasin style loafer with a durable rubber outsole. The wide toe box allows for bunions! Available at Chacos.com, Zappos, and Amazon.

Dansko Marta

Dansko Marta

The Dansko Marta is a closed-toe sandal with a laser-cut upper, cushioned footbed and rocker sole–great for propelling the foot forward while taking pressure off painful toes. Available at Zappos, The Walking Company, and Amazon.

Sanita Cambridge

A favorite of medical professionals, Sanita classic clogs feature anatomically correct footbeds with sturdy arch support and a rocker sole. A wide and deep toe box accommodates bunions and hammertoes. The Cambridge style is available at Shoebuy.

Fitflop Superskate

Like walking on clouds! Customers love the bouncy, cushioned feel of the dual-density SupercomFF™ footbed. The Superskate is one of Fitflop’s newer more streamlined styles with all the comfort of their original sandals. Available at Zappos, Nordstrom and Amazon.

Keep in mind, the APMA Seal of Acceptance is not an endorsement, but a recognition granted to products that have been found to be beneficial for foot health.  Check out the APMA’s complete list here, and share in comments about your favorite finds!

I can’t believe clogs are still on anyone’s list of shoes that are good for your health when they’ve been proven to destroy your knees over time. I guess APMA focuses solely on feet (no pun intended, LOL!). I really miss my clogs but, after switching to flat, flexible shoes, my knees have never felt better.

Bette, I didn’t realize clogs were bad for your knees. I have several pairs. Now that I’ve found barkingdogshoes.com, I’ll be on the lookout for slip on shoes to wear with dress pants.

PS. My comment was directed at APMA, not this list or Kirsten! I realize I may have sounded critical of Barking Dog Shoes — not my intent at all. I love this site!

Hi Bette–didn’t read it that way at all. I used to think clogs were the end-all, be-all to my foot problems but have found other options that feel (and look) better. I love any kind of feedback!

I wear SAS shoes a lot. They have great support.
